The American College of Surgeons (ACS) was born on May 5,1913 after the idea of forming a college of surgeons came to Franklin Marlin’s mind. Fifty-one years later, in August 4, 1964 the Lebanon Chapter of the ACS was born with 12 members on board.
Here we are, 52 years later, still going strong despite the instability in our part of the world, thanks to the dedication and perseverance of our predecessors.
Our Chapter today is 120 fellows strong and comprises surgeons from every corner of the country. It is one of the oldest of the 40 international ACS Chapters and with 73 additional resident members, a record holder in that regard.
The Lebanon Chapter is still holding a Surgical Congress every 2 years and the 15th Surgical Congress, planned for June 2015 together with the Lebanese Society for General Surgery, promises to be a major international event. It will be preceded by the Lebanese Board Examination in General Surgery and by the ACS General Surgery Review Course which will be provided in Lebanon exclusively and for the first time outside the USA. I would like here to acknowledge the dynamism of our Governor, Dr. Jamal Hoballah who is playing a key role in promoting the Lebanon Chapter on the international map of the College.
Another great achievement of the Lebanon Chapter is the Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®). In 2010, and after several years of negotiations, the Lebanon Chapter leadership was able to bring the ATLS®. to Lebanon.
The ATLS® course is widely accepted as the standard of care for initial assessment and treatment in trauma centers across the world.
The course is now being given at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) by a team of dedicated people under the leadership of Dr. George Abi Saad, who is doing an excellent job, and a generous contribution from Roads for Life, a Lebanese organization headed by Mrs. Zeina Kassem, dedicated to improving road safety in Lebanon.
The Lebanon Chapter and its ATLS® team were recognized and awarded during the Committee on Trauma awards ceremony at the Clinical Congress in San Francisco, October 2014.
Taking the Chapter to new heights is our goal. Our predecessors left us with a big responsibility at hand. We have so much yet to do and promise to keep the flame alight. We need your active participation in all of the Chapter’s activities in order to make our dream your reality.
